I love the long denim skirt trend and I rented one in my last nuuly box to give it a try. Here are a couple different ways I've styled a long denim skirt along with a roundup of some different options out there that come in plus and extended sizing.
I love my using the Nuuly clothing rental service to try new styles and trends without making a commitment in my wardrobe. This last month I rented a long denim skirt and was excited to see if I would like styling it enough to keep it and purchase it from my nuuly. Spoiler, I loved it and am keeping it.
At first I was a little intimidated and wanted to just wear it with a t shirt and sneakers (which is still a super cute look) but this fall I've really been into layering sweaters with more structured button-downs. I've surprised myself with how often I've been wearing the denim skirt to work which is one of the main reasons that I'm going to keep the skirt - it will be a staple work/office and weekend piece in my wardrobe. Here are a couple different ways I'm styling this denim pencil skirt this fall in Seattle.

Plus Size Denim Pencil Skirt - What I Ordered
I'm renting this Pilcro Pencil Denim Skirt from Anthropoligie Via Nuuly. It's structured but has stretch which is a really nice option for pencil skirt (which tend to be a bit restrictive in the legs if the material is not stretchy.) I'm wearing a size 16W which is part of the "plus size" range also known as extended sizing. I believe the traditional sizing goes up to a 32 or a 33, but I'm almost a true 34 so the 16W works great. It's a high waist so for people like me with a bigger belly and a smaller upper waist, this cut works really well with my body shape.
I also like that this particular skirt is a long denim skirt that *doesn't* have a slit in the front. Now don't get me wrong, I think the slit is super cute, but it wouldn't work as well for me when I wear this to the office. I feel like the traditional pencil cut with the small slit in the back makes this especially versatile for me in particular - as I do tend to dress on the more conservative/business casual side for the office.
Unfortunately, because I'm renting this style it means that it's likely from last season or before so the exact item is sold out. This is the newer version of the skirt - very similar but without the zippers. Plus sizes are available.
Style 1 - Skirt, Sweater & Boots
I paired this denim skirt with these tall riding boots that I picked up on major sale from Madewell last year. I love how this skirt has both a casual vibe because it's denim but with the pencil skirt cut, it feels a bit elevated at the same time. Pairing a skirt with a pair of boots always feels like it's in my comfort zone because I don't wear heels very often so a nice pair of boots always helps makes me feel fancy and more upgraded from a pair of sneakers. Although, I think that this outfit would still be super cute with my converse or vejas.
This sweater is a few years old from Old Navy but I love the way that it can layer over a button down or even a dress. It's light weight and perfect for these transitional fall days where it's still a little warm in seattle (anything over 60 degrees counts as warm for us here in Seattle.)
Style 2 - White button down & Belt
By peeling off a layer and removing the sweater, this outfit has an entire new look with just the white button down. This feels like a more professional, literal white collar lewk that I would wear to the office when I have important meetings that I need to dress up for. I like the way that the skirt elongates my legs when I tuck in the white top and I would even *maybe* consider wearing this with a pair of black pumps if I really wanted to be extra fancy.
I just love the look of a very stiff startchy white collar 😉 Do people still actually "starch" their collars or is that something that people only did in the 1950s?
Where to Shop Plus Size Denim Skirts
I rounded up some of my favorite denim skirts that are currently out there and carried in plus sizes. I didn't realize how difficult this was going to be! I really wanted to find a handful of options that were a true pencil skirt cut (with the slit in the back and not the front) and it was a lot harder than I expected! But I'm happy to have done the work and have organized many of the plus size options out there into one place. TBD on the quality of this one from Amazon but the price point is definitely there! This one is a fraction of the cost of other higher quality denim skirt. This style comes in plus sizes, but like most things on amazon fashion, I highly recommend to check the reviews and sizing charts.
